Mission of Mercy clinics are set up similar to a private primary care physician's office. We seek to provide a continuum of care, not just emergency or screening services. We are fully equipped to diagnose and treat conditions ranging from acute to chronic illnesses. Like a primary care physician, Mission of Mercy doctors can provide basic care or specialty needs, including:
Mission of Mercy dispenses free prescription medications only to those patients who are treated at our clinics. The formulary contains over 225 types of medications and each patient averages two or more free prescriptions per visit. Prescriptions are provided on-site, immediately after treatment.
Patients requiring medications not available in our formulary are assisted by volunteers who register patients for the Pharmacy Assistance Programs offered by the larger pharmaceutical companies. These medications are shipped to Mission of Mercy and dispensed to the patient at no charge. More than $800,000 in medications is recouped annually through these programs.
Over 70% of our patients have one or more chronic illness and depend on Mission of Mercy for long term care. Upon diagnosis of a chronic condition, we schedule regular appointments for the patient so we can effectively monitor their conditions and provide an ongoing supply of needed prescription medications.
Dental care is either altogether unavailable, or is an unaffordable luxury, for most that we serve. Mission of Mercy patients usually arrive at the clinic with significant decay, infection, and pain. Untreated infections are the most serious concern, as they can lead to serious illness or death. Extractions and filings are the remedy for most patients, and healing is usually swift.
Mission of Mercy's dental program is fully mobile; operating with a portable treatment chair, x-ray machine, light, high-speed autoclave, multiple sets of prepackaged instruments, hand tools, compressor, and auxiliary electric generator. Along with fillings and extractions, visits also include a dental exam, x-rays and instruction on proper dental hygiene. When available, toothbrushes and dental floss are also provided.

Located in Frederick Maryland out of the Frederick Church of the Brethren, Mission of Mercy has treated expectant mothers and children of all ages since its inception in 1994. To handle the increase in demand for prenatal care, and to address the lack of available services in Frederick County, Maryland, Mission of Mercy launched a Prenatal Care Pilot Project in 2001. This included the recruitment of an obstetrician and expansion of its prenatal services. In 2002, MOM expanded its services further by recruiting a volunteer nurse mid-wife, establishing a separate waiting and examination area, increasing the clinics days, and increasing the patient load.

The volunteer physicians of Mission of Mercy cannot deliver a child, so prior to a mother's due date, we provide her with a copy of her medical records, including lab and fetal Doppler imaging results. When she goes into labor and presents herself at an emergency room, the hospital has background information on the mother and child.
Mission of Mercy's prenatal care program does two very important things to make a difference in the lives of its participants. First, it cuts down the barrier of uninsured mothers receiving prenatal care and allows them to receive care earlier in their pregnancy and more often. Lack of prenatal care contributes to poorer maternal health. The care they receive allows potentially serious complications to be diagnosed early, while treatment is still feasible, thus heading-off potentially serious consequences such as short gestation and low birth weight. Low birth weight infants face a much higher risk of health problems and death than other newborns.
Secondly, it provides expectant mothers with a sense of comfort in knowing they are doing what they can to help bring a healthy child into the world. They know that they have a place to turn if they have questions about their pregnancy or have concerns about their health. The support they receive at the clinic, and the anxiety that is removed from their life, also plays a major part in the health of their child. Mothers who do not speak English also have access to translators.
Existing Mission of Mercy patients may make appointments at the clinic or call the appointment number listed for each of the clinics. (Link to Locate a Maryland/Pennsylvania Clinic). The appointment lines are staffed by volunteers, so callers are often instructed to leave a detailed message and they will receive a return call. Generally, appointments are booked four to six weeks in advance.
Mission of Mercy does not take appointments for new patients. They must first be seen as a walk-in, of which, Mission of Mercy takes a limited number each day. To be seen as a walk-in, patients must arrive well before the clinic opens and line up to register. Because the daily demand at each clinic varies and impacts what time walk-in patients should arrive, we generally ask that they arrive as early as possible, usually no later than 7 a.m.
Dental patients are seen only on a walk-in basis, with patients arriving very early and lining up to register. Eight or nine patients are treated each dental clinic day. The need for care is so great that patients have camped out overnight in hopes of guaranteeing an appointment. The dental clinic program is staffed entirely by volunteer dentists, some of which are organized through local Dental Societies. Mission of Mercy provides prescription medications for our patients only. We are not a dispensing pharmacy and do not fill prescriptions.
Mission of Mercy provides primary care. We are not an urgent or emergency care clinic.
Referrals for lab, X-rays, etc., and to our limited network of medical specialists, are for our patients only. We provide these only on the orders of Mission of Mercy physicians.
Mission of Mercy strives to treat those with no other access to care. Patients that qualify for medical assistance, subsidized health insurance, or other community programs, should be referred elsewhere, where possible.
Mission of Mercy's dental program is limited to fillings and extractions. We do not provide preventative dental care (cleaning and exams), reconstruction (implants, veneers, crowns, or bridges), cosmetic dentistry or orthodontics.
